US GOVERNMENT HOLDS OVER 1,000X MORE BITCOIN THAN ETHEREUM
Washington, September 21, 2025 — Newly released data has revealed that the U.S. government’s cryptocurrency holdings are heavily concentrated in Bitcoin (BTC), with reserves exceeding 1,000 times its Ethereum (ETH) holdings.
The figures underscore Washington’s outsized exposure to Bitcoin, much of which was acquired through high-profile asset seizures linked to criminal cases, darknet markets, and enforcement actions over the past decade. By contrast, the government’s ETH reserves remain relatively negligible.
Analysts suggest the imbalance reflects both Bitcoin’s dominance as the oldest and most widely used digital asset, as well as the fact that early enforcement actions primarily targeted BTC-related activities. However, some experts believe the lack of ETH exposure could limit the government’s influence in emerging sectors such as DeFi and Web3.
The revelation is likely to fuel further debate about how governments should manage seized digital assets — whether to hold, auction, or deploy them strategically in the financial system.
